Explosion in vehicle after woman lights a cigarette

A Roodepoort woman believed to be in her 50s sustained third-degree burns after a lit cigarette caused an explosion inside her car.

It was believed the incident happened on Wednesday after the woman got into her car in the Roodekrans area of Roodepoort on the West Rand, and habitually lit a cigarette.

Unbeknownst to her, the gas bottle she kept near the backseat of her vehicle had a leak,Roodeport Record reported.

The ensuing explosion was contained inside the vehicle, which was not set alight.

According to witnesses, neighbours mistook the loud explosion for a gunshot.

Paramedics later arrived and treated the woman on the scene.

According to paramedics, the woman had sustained third-degree burns to the whole of her left arm, her left shoulder, the back of her neck and her back.

After stabilising the woman, paramedics later rushed her to Leratong Hospital.

In a separate incident on the other side of the world, a UK barmaid was momentarily set alight when an electronic cigarette exploded inside a pub.

The explosion came after a patron had the e-cigarette connected to a charger, Mirror Onlinereported in April last year.

The device was reportedly charging behind the bar when the barmaid heard a loud bang and saw a huge fireball that set her dress alight.
