Firearms recovered, suspects arrested
A joint operation held by the Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police and Msinga Police Crime prevention team at Msinga in KwaZulu-Natal has led to an arrest of four suspects and recovery of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Yesterday, the members had raided few homesteads in the area after they had received information about illegal firearms, police said
Police added seven unlicensed firearms and 16 live rounds had been recovered from various homesteads.
Recovered firearms included rifles, pistols and .38 special revolvers, said police.
Four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
They will appear today, January 20, 2015, in the Msinga Magistrates’ Court.
All recovered firearms will be sent for ballistics tests to establish if they had been used in any other crimes in the country.
The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended the good work by dedicated members.
“I also thank the members of the community for their continued support in the fight against crime by providing valuable information to the police about illegal firearms in their areas,”said Ngobeni.
Ngobeni added those firearms were normally used in robberies and killing of innocent people in our country.
In a separate incident, a 60-year-old man was arrested in Nongoma for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition last Tuesday.
Colonel Jay Naicker said police had received a tip-off about the illegal firearm.
“Police found the suspect in his house, and during a search of the premises, he was found in possession of a .38 revolver with three live rounds,” added Naicker.
