Five KZN hijackers arrested

Five men have been arrested for hijacking as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Mariannhill, KwaZulu-Natal.

The suspects will be detained at the Chatsworth Police Station and are due to appear in court soon, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

It has been alleged a man had been hijacked of his Ford Figo at gunpoint in the Savannah Park vicinity yesterday.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said members of the community, who witnessed the incident, immediately contacted the police force, who then followed up on the complaint.

“While pursuing the stolen vehicle, the suspects opened fire at police officers. Police re-enforcements were immediately dispatched to the area.

The suspects were found in possession of three unlicensed firearms and also 29 rounds of ammunition,” said Zwane.

He added the vehicle taken by the suspects had been recovered, as well as a white VW Polo – which belonged to a rental company – used by the suspects.

“The arrested suspects, aged between 24 and 30 years, might be linked to other cases committed in the area,” said Zwane.

Last week, one of two alleged hijackers was shot and wounded during a car chase and shoot-out in uMhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal.

Police said the hijackers managed to evade capture and took off in the direction of the N25.
