Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 sells for R13m

The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 was developed by Ford’s motorsport division and ultimately designed to dominate the touring car racing circuit in the 1980s.

The RS500 variant of Ford’s Sierra Cosworth was produced in limited numbers, making it a rare and highly sought-after collector’s item. Recently, one of these rare machines was sold for a jaw-dropping £596 250 (about R12 977 154) at Silverstone Auctions, setting a record for the model.

The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 was first introduced in 1987, and it quickly became a legend in the world of high-performance cars. The vehicle was powered by a turbocharged 2,0-litre engine that could produce up to 152 kW of power.

This made it one of the most powerful cars on the market at the time, and it was an instant hit with car enthusiasts who appreciated its sleek design and impressive performance.

The RS500 variant of the Sierra Cosworth was even more exclusive than the standard model. It featured a range of performance enhancements, including a larger turbocharger, a modified fuel system, and a more efficient intercooler. These changes allowed the RS500 to produce up to 167 kW of power, making it one of the most powerful cars of its era.

The RS500 was also fitted with a range of cosmetic enhancements, including a more aggressive body kit, larger wheels, and a rear spoiler.

Despite its impressive performance and exclusivity, the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 was only produced in limited numbers. Only 500 examples were built and many of them were used for racing purposes.

As a result, the RS500 has become a highly sought-after collector’s item, with prices for well-maintained examples soaring in recent years. The recent sale price of nearly 600 000 pounds underscores the growing demand for high-quality examples of this rare and historic car.

The vehicle in question was one of just 56 right-hand drive RS500s produced, and it had been meticulously maintained over the years. The car had just 8 355 km on the clock and is in pristine condition, both inside and out.

As more collectors seek out rare and exclusive vehicles, prices for these machines are likely to continue rising. For those lucky enough to own a rare car like the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500, this is certainly good news..
