A collaborative effort led by the Hawks in Mpumalanga resulted in the arrest of four suspects a few hours after a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist took place yesterday on the Jeppes Reef road (R570), near One Tree Hill in Nkomazi.

According to the spokesperson of Mpumalanga Hawks, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, a Fidelity Security Service armoured vehicle (AV) was travelling from Malalane towards Tonga.

“About 15km from the N4, the AV was rammed by a C-Class Mercedes-Benz. The AV lost control and overturned. It was then bombed and approximately R8 000 in coins were stolen. This cash was destined for a business in Tonga. The suspects fled in the direction of Tonga.”

Sekgotodi says two vehicles which were used during the robbery were recovered at a safe house in Schoemansdal where the four were arrested.

She said the investigation is continuing as more information is being followed up and further successes are expected.

The provincial head of the Hawks, Major-General Nicholas Gerber, said the Hawks have had a serious impact in CIT heists over the past weeks.

“We will not rest as this collaborative effort strategy bears excellent results in a short space of time.”
