Gauteng heatwave will persist

The SA Weather Service says the present heatwave is expected to persist until Sunday.

There is an indication of somewhat cooler conditions for Sunday evening over large parts of the country due to a cold front over the east coast, except over western Limpopo, Rekord Centurion reported.

“This will result in a temporary break in the heatwave on Monday for at least one day,” the service said in a statement.

However, the high-pressure system is expected to re-establish itself again on October 13 and October 14, when extremely high temperatures will return.

“That high pressure is then expected to weaken a lot from October 15, replaced by a trough [extension of low pressure]. This will result in good prospects of rain over the northeastern and eastern parts of the country, and it is expected to become substantially cooler,” the statement read.

The service advised residents to stay indoors in a well-ventilated or air-conditioned room. If working outside, wear protective clothing and take breaks at regular intervals.

Avoid excessive sport or doing hard labour, dress in lightweight clothing, drink plenty of liquids (no alcohol) and outside playtime for kids must limited or prohibited between 10am and 4pm.

The service will continue to monitor developments and will issue further updates as required.
