Guards beaten during AfriSam robbery

Eight security guards were allegedly attacked and tied up by a group of more than 20 men during a robbery at the Afrisam Mine in Dawn Park, Boksburg.

Two of the guards tried to fight the attackers, but they were severely beaten and later admitted to hospital in critical condition on Monday, Boksburg Advertiser reported.

Police spokesperson Captain Charles Tshabalala said the robbery took place in the early hours of Monday morning.

“The guards were overpowered by the thugs, who arrived with a huge truck to load the loot,” he said.

A total of six Caterpillar truck tyres and batteries worth R700 000 were allegedly stolen by the men, who fled the scene shortly afterwards.

Police have not yet made any arrests.

In November, a security guard was reportedly shot and wounded during a bank robbery in Fordsburg, Johannesburg.

It is alleged an armed suspect had entered the bank, shot a security guard in the hand, and took two bags of cash before fleeing the scene.

No arrests had been made.
