Hatfield to rise again

Pretoria’s recently demolished popular hangout spot, Hatfield Square, is set for a major facelift over the next two years.

Led by the Respublica Student Living Property Fund, the new development will be a mixed-use precinct and includes state-of-the-art residences, retail and leisure facilities centred on a cosmopolitan piazza.

Craig McMurray, CEO of Respublica, said their vision was to make the new precinct a district of choice for Pretoria’s student community.

“We are working hard to make Hatfield even more of a student hub than it already is. In the coming years it will be able to accommodate a further 2 200 students,” he said.

McMurray said they were sensitive to the history of Hatfield Square and were going to retain the original space for public enjoyment.

While the precinct will focus on meeting the needs of students at large, it will also provide a rejuvenated public area with convenience stores, restaurants and coffee shops.

Mike Ruttell, executive director of development at Redefine Properties, a partner in the project, said: “The first phase of construction will be complete by the end of 2016, while the second phase will be ready for occupation by the end of 2017,” he said.

Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa said the new development would further consolidate the city’s status as a research and education centre of excellence.

“The development of this ‘university city’ will further increase our shares and contribution towards the country’s GDP. It will set us apart as a tourist destination,” he said.
