Homeless man saves another from drowning

A homeless man has been commended for saving a man from drowning at Cape Town’s Bantry Bay Beach, paramedics said on Friday.

The unidentified homeless man reportedly witnessed the 37-year-old man struggling in the water. He then ran and jumped into the water and pulled the man to safety, ER24 said in a statement.

“Paramedics responded to the beach, and on arrival, found that metro services had begun treating the man,” the statement said.

“ER24 paramedics assisted with the treatment before the patient was immobilised and transported to New Somerset Hospital for further treatment,”

The homeless did not sustain any injuries. Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.

“I must commend the rescuer for his immediate and prompt action,” said the ward councillor for the area, Jacques Weber.

“This incident could have resulted in a loss of life which was prevented.”

Weber added that the importance of entering the water only if one is able to swim well must be stressed, especially if there was a strong current.
