Hospital staff arrested for murder
Two RK Khan Hospital employees in KwaZulu-Natal have been arrested for the alleged murder of a psychiatric patient.
The murder was believed to have occurred in December 2011, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.
The two accused appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where they were granted bail of R2 000 and released.
According to police reports, a psychiatric patient admitted at the R K Khan Hospital passed away at the hospital in 2011.
A case of murder was registered at the Chatsworth Police Station and investigations continued.
The deceased could not be identified by family or friends. The deceased’s fingerprints were later sent to Pretoria, and police were unable to trace any information on the deceased.
Chatsworth police spokesperson Lieutenant Cheryl Pillay said: “The investigating officer conducted an intensive investigation into this matter and identified a witness to the murder. The witness identified the two suspects in this case. Both accused are employees of R K Khan Hospital.”
Chatsworth Police Station commander Brigadier Coenraad Marais commended Detective Warrant Officer SR Moodley for the successful apprehension of the suspects.
In a separate incident, a patient died at the Netcare Unitas Hospital in Centurion, near Pretoria, in November.
No foul play was suspected as the 68-year-old man was believed to have jumped from a staircase on the second floor of the hospital.
