KZN e-hailing driver arrested for allegedly robbing passengers

A woman and her friend were allegedly robbed by an e-hailing driver, but they managed to escape while the car was stationary by jumping out.

Two women are still reeling from shock after they were allegedly robbed in an e-hailing vehicle, which they had booked to go home following a day of shopping at a Tongaat mall, north of Durban, over the weekend.

The drama unfolded when the victim alleged that the driver deviated from the route to her destination.

Tongaat SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said it is alleged that on their way home, the driver of the vehicle turned onto Watson Highway towards the M4. When the complainant asked why he took the wrong turn, the front passenger shouted at them and told them to remain quiet.

“Despite hearing the sound, she did not see the gun. The passenger then demanded their cellphones and passwords for their banking apps. It is claimed that the suspect transferred money out of her account,” said Maharaj-Marie.

“The woman added that the driver collided with another vehicle but only stopped at the Umhloti off-ramp to inspect the vehicle. The victim and her friend jumped off the vehicle while it was stationary and flagged down a taxi. They were dropped off at Durban Central SAPS, who referred them to Tongaat SAPS to open a case.”

The case was opened and quickly saw a speedy intervention as detectives were able to arrest one suspect.
