KZN family fights off armed robbers

Police have opened an attempted robbery case after a 20-year-old woman and her family were allegedly attacked by two men at the Mzimayi bridge in Hibberdene, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday evening.

The woman and her family were reportedly walking home from the beach when they were approached by two suspects armed with knives, South Coast Herald reported.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said one of the men allegedly held a knife to the woman’s ribs before grabbing her backpack and slicing it open while the second man reportedly held a knife to her face.

Wiid added the woman’s mother sprang to her daughter’s defence and managed to hit one of the suspects while her uncle hit the other with a stick.

The suspects then fled without taking any belongings.

No injuries were reported.

In a separate incident, 20-year-old Sachin Soni was shot twice in the stomach while protecting his father during a house robbery in February last year.

Five armed men forced their way into the family’s Greenwood Park home in KwaZulu-Natal and demanded cash, jewellery and cellphones.

Soni died later in hospital.

The father reportedly tried to fight off the attackers with a broom when his son intervened and subsequently got shot.
