Limpopo tavern shooting: 5 injured, owner killed
Police believe that the same gunmen might be responsible for two fatal tavern shootings in two months.
Police are on a manhunt to track down a gang of armed gunmen after two shooting incidents at taverns in Limpopo where they randomly opened fire at bystanders, killing several people. In the last incident in Louis Trichardt, Limpopo, a business owner was killed and five people injured.
The latest shooting that happened just before midnight on Saturday follows a similar incident in June in Muchipisi, Malamulele, where two people were killed and four injured.
Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, says the deceased in the most recent shooting was identified as 41-year-old Tshimangadzo Andries Makuya, also known as Dollar. He was shot several times in the upper body.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that two unknown armed men entered the premises and randomly started shooting at people inside the tavern,” says Ledwaba.
It is believed that the suspects fled the scene in a white VW Polo and a silver-grey Mercedes-Benz with unknown registration numbers.
The motive for the incident is unknown, and the police have opened a case of murder and attempted murder.
The provincial police commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has ordered the suspects to be hunted down.
Police believe those responsible are a gang of gunmen who travel in two separate vehicles.
They are calling on the public to assist with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. Ledwaba says a high-level task team is investigating the matter.
Anyone with information that can assist with the investigations can contact the investigating officer, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Boshomane, on 079 894 5501, Warrant Officer Phaladi Makola on 082 749 2233, the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, the nearest police station, or the MySAPS App.
