Mamelodi protest disrupts Metrorail train services

Gauteng Metrorail spokesperson condemned the protesters’ behaviour.

Metrorail train services operating in Pienaarspoort, Mamelodi, were disrupted due to a service delivery protest on Monday morning, reports the Pretoria East Rekord.

It is still unclear what the protest was about but Gauteng Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said infrastructure was damaged after tyres were burnt on railway tracks.

“The protest had nothing to do with Metrorail trains, but commuters can’t use the railway because the railway tracks have been damaged,” said Mofokeng.

“All trains running on this corridor are turning around at Eestefabrieke for safety reasons.”

Mofokeng condemned the protesters’ behaviour.

We strongly condemn the violence as it negatively affects hundreds of commuters who depend on trains to get to their destination and economic activities.

“No alternative transport will be arranged for commuters at affected train stations.

“Metrorail apologises for any inconvenience this might cause.”

She said the challenge could only be won when commuters/residents partnered with Metrorail and reported all incidents to their nearest police stations.

Alternatively, residents could also contact Metrorail’s Security and Protection Services numbers on 011-774-8566/7/8 (Johannesburg) and 012-315-2777 or 012-315-2566 (Pretoria).
