Man beats dog for eating its own faeces

A 63-year-old man is expected to re-appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates` Court after allegedly attacking his dog with a knobkerrie when the dog allegedly ate its own faeces in Florida, on the West Rand.

The ordeal was reportedly captured of video footage by a neighbour. The footage was presented in court this week as evidence against the accused, Roodepoort Record reported.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, Eric Taljaard from the Roodepoort SPCA put his laptop on the table in front of the prosecutor and other court representatives to show them the gruesome video.

In the video, the greyhound dog could be heard howling in pain, however, while the owner continued to beat it with a knobkerrie until it was unconscious.

“The greyhound couldn’t move, couldn’t lift his head. He was lying in the mud, in the urine … you know, like when someone has just given up,” said SPCA manager Mandy Cattannach in a statement.

The man had initially pleaded guilty to all charges but decided to change the initial guilty plea, resulting in his legal representative withdrawing from the case.

Cattannach said the dog was removed from the property and veterinarians euthanised it due to the severe injuries it had sustained.

Although the incident happened in February this year, Cattanach said the dog has allegedly been living in bad conditions for a while.

She said the accused showed absolutely no remorse when he appeared in court yesterday.

The accused will appear again in court on October 15.
