Man injured as gas cylinder explodes in Kempton Park

The explosion occurred in an enclosed and contained area at a business in Chloorkop, and follows a fatal explosion in Johannesburg.

One person was injured when a 48kg gas cylinder exploded at a business property in Chloorkop, Kempton Park, this morning.

The cylinder is believed to have contained ammonia.

According to City of Ekurhuleni Disasters and Emergency Management Services (Dems) spokesperson William Ntladi, the explosion occurred in an enclosed and contained area.

The injured man was treated on scene before he was transported to hospital and the area has been cleared.

Incident in the wake of fatal explosion

The incident follows an explosion in the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday, in which one person was killed and 48 left injured during a blast in Lilian Ngoyi Street (formerly Bree Street).

Roads remain closed in the area as investigations into the cause of the explosion continue.

SANews.gov.za reports that Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Sihle Zikalala has called on teams of professionals to stand ready to support initiatives led by the Gauteng premier and City of Johannesburg leadership.

City of Johannesburg engineer Floyd Brink last night briefed the media and said three possible causes of the deadly explosion have been identified.

“These are ignition of methane gas in underground storm water systems due to sewerage ingress. The second possibility considered is the ignition of natural gas, mixed with air in underground storm water drainage systems or service ducts.

“The third and last possibility is the ignition of gas from a gas pipe burst,” he said.
