Man killed in freak accident in KZN

The life of a 28-year-old KZN businessman was unexpectedly cut short in a freak accident, which occurred in Durban last Tuesday.

Derosh Rohul Sewraj was killed after he was struck by a light pole when a runaway truck containing a load of bricks, knocked into a pole.

According to Brighton Beach SAPS station’s corporate communication and liaison officer Captain Louise Le Roux, the bricks were being offloaded on a business premises on Brighton Road, near the Wentworth Hotel.

While they bricks were being offloaded, the truck started moving away from the trailer and it is believed that there was no driver in the truck at the time of the incident.

“The truck knocked down a light pole which then struck a man who was standing on the pavement. The man passed away at the scene. The truck then rolled down an embankment and came to a standstill after colliding into a house. Fortunately, no one in the house was injured,” Le Roux explained.

Detectives at Brighton Beach SAPS are investigating a culpable homicide case. Sewraj was the director of Choice Cars, an established car dealership which deals in second-hand motors.

“He was full of energy and was dedicated to his job. He had the highest respect for his elders and people in general. We received over 400 messages of condolences and at least half of the people mentioned how respectful he was and commended us for how well we had raised him,” said the deceased’s father, Sonu Sewraj.

He described his son as someone who was very humble and health conscious.

“He was a gym fanatic and visited the gym five times a week. He loved fine dining and we always dined together. That is something I will miss doing with him,” Sewraj shared.

He added that he would miss his son’s infectious smile, jovial laugh and his caring nature towards his siblings and wife whom he loved dearly.

Sewraj’s funeral service took place at his place of residence and thereafter proceeded to the Clare Estate Crematorium Hall on September 8.
