Matric Exam 2018: Markers unhappy about payment
Betsi Greyvenstein from the South African Teachers Unions said the Free State was the last of all the provinces to adhere to the new national payment formula.
Markers of the matric answer sheets in the Free State say they are unhappy after the provincial Education Department changed the payment formula this year, Bloemfontein Courant reports.
Teachers who are registered as markers were informed that although they were previously paid per answer sheet that they marked, they would this year be paid per hour. One of the markers, who spoke to OFM News, indicated that some markers can thus get up to R5000 less this year.
Betsi Greyvenstein from the South African Teachers Unions (SAOU) says there was wide communication about the change in payment – although markers claim they were only informed once the marking process started.
Greyvenstein said the Free State was the last of all the provinces to adhere to the new national payment formula.
Meanwhile, the department expressed confidence that markers will reach the deadline, set for today, for marking and no incidents were reported.
The Director-General (DG) for Basic Education, Mathanzima Mweli, has been visiting marking centres across the country said he would meet with Eskom after he noted that load-shedding might delay the capturing of marks.
