Missing North-West University student found dead

The student's body was found in Gauteng and her identity was confirmed through DNA tests.

The body of a North-West University (NWU) third-year psychology student Karabo Magomani Maluleke (21), who was reported missing on May 27, was found burnt beyond recognition in Gauteng.

Her family opened a missing person case at the Potchefstroom Police Station. Police found Maluleke’s body in Krugersdorp at the end of June after a month-long search.

North West police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, confirmed that a suspect was arrested on June 23 in Giyani, Limpopo, in connection with Maluleke’s death.

NWU shared a message of condolence after learning of Maluleke’s passing.

“We extend our condolences to her family and friends. May they be blessed with the strength to deal with this tragic loss. It is a sad moment when the life of such a young person abruptly comes to an end. That the loss happened during Youth Month makes it even more disturbing.”

NWU spokesperson Louis Jacobs says a memorial service for Maluleke will take place at the Potchefstroom campus on Thursday, July 20.

Maluleke’s family posted a statement on social media regarding her death.

“The DNA tests conducted earlier this week confirmed that the charred corpse was that of our beloved Karabo. The police’s discovery of the gruesome murder of our sister marked the end of a month-long uncertainty. While we are deeply saddened by her passing, as a family, we are comforted by the fact that we now know what happened to her, thus closing that first chapter of uncertainty. The next chapter is to ensure that the perpetrators of this barbaric act are put in long-term imprisonment.

“We extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the immense support you have given us as a family since we informed you about the disappearance,” the statement reads.
