Mother arrested for negligence

A woman has been arrested after neighbours reported her to the police for allegedly locking her four-year-old daughter in a house every day in Alberton, on the East Rand.

The woman has been charged with child abuse and negligence for locking the child in the house on weekdays while she went to work, Alberton Record reported.

The woman’s daughter has since been taken to a place of safety.

Neighbours said the girl called for them to open the door and take her away, and police arrived later on Friday to attend to the situation.

“She (the mother) could have just let us know that she had to go to work and needed someone to take care of her little girl,” said one neighbour.

“There is always someone at the complex, and there are a few mothers who would have been more than willing to help out a neighbour in need.”

This comes after a woman was arrested in Alexandra, Johannesburg, for allegedly abandoning her disabled daughter.

The eight-year-old girl, who was the size of a toddler, was unable to walk or talk when found in a tiny, windowless shack during a safety awareness campaign in May last year.
