Mpumalanga tavern shooting sees 1 dead and many injured

An investigation is underway into a pub shooting that claimed a life this weekend.

A man was fatally shot and at least 15 others injured in a tavern shooting in KaNyamazane, Mpumalanga, on Sunday morning.

Two armed men wearing balaclavas stormed into the tavern and started shooting just after midnight, says provincial police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli.

One man, not yet identified, was fatally shot, and about 15 other patrons sustained gunshot wounds, he adds. They were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

“After the shooting, the suspects are said to have fled the scene,” Mdhluli says.

A case of murder, with counts of attempted murder, has been opened, Mdhluli confirms.

The motive for the shooting is not yet known, and no arrests have been made.

“A team of investigators has been assembled, under the leadership of provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela,” says Mdhluli.

The police urge anyone with information to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via the My SAPS app.
