Murdered Shahiel Sewpujun laid to rest
A funeral was held on Monday for Shahiel Sewpujun (9), who was found dead inside a manhole in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday.
The funeral, initially planned as a memorial service, was held in accordance with Islamic customs after police released the boy’s body, following a postmortem.
Sewpujun is believed to have been abducted after he went missing last week while on his way to school.
He was found naked, with visible injuries and burns on parts of his body, after a tip-off from a community member.
Three suspects have reportedly been held for questioning in connection with the boy’s murder.
The suspects, two men and a woman, are believed to be related to the slain child.
In a separate incident, the mother and grandmother of a three-year-old toddler were arrested for murder in November last year after the child was found dead at their house in Chatsworth, Durban.
The toddler had allegedly been abused.
She reportedly had cigarette burns on her, and her fingernails and toenails seemed to have been yanked out.
The two women, Patricia Ishwaral and Salatchee Basanich, have since been sent to Fort Napier Hospital in Pietermaritzburg for mental observation.
