One suspect killed in botched armed robbery in Lenasia

Three suspects were injured when their getaway vehicle crashed with a truck while another was fatally injured in a shootout with police.

Six suspected robbers were arrested, and one shot and killed after they attempted to rob a Lenasia businessman yesterday.

The Hawks’ Tactical Operational Management Section, Gauteng Traffic’s Saturation Unit, and Vaal Rand Serious Organised Crime Investigation were involved in the arrest of the suspects, aged between 25 and 45.

The police’s Colonel Katlego Mogala says that the multi-disciplinary team followed up on information received from Crime Intelligence.

The suspects were observed but noticed the surveillance team as they were about to execute the alleged robbery.

While some of alleged robbers were inside the premises of their target, the rest fled the scene, leaving them behind.

Law enforcement chased after the fleeing suspects while a shootout broke out between police and the suspects who remained behind inside the property.

Mogale says “During the high-speed chase, the suspects’ vehicle collided with a truck, resulting in the chasing vehicle swerving to avoid the truck, and colliding with another vehicle.

“Three suspects were arrested with injuries, and one team member was taken to hospital for medical attention.”

He says the getaway vehicle had false registration plates.

“Three unlicensed firearms were recovered from the scene. The suspects will appear in the Lenasia court on a charge of murder, attempted murder, house robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”
