Pit bulls attack woman
Two pit bull dogs have been put down by the SPCA after attacking a housekeeper in Monument, Krugersdorp, on the West Rand.
A case was later opened at the Krugersdorp Police Station, Krugersdorp News reported.
The dogs attacked Elizabeth Motsumi (53) on Friday while she was on her way to her employer’s house.
Dog owner Hendrik Zinn said he had done his best to get the dogs away from Motsumi when they attacked her, as he had been outside at the time.
“I don’t know how they got into the street. They somehow managed to escape from my property through my gate,” he said.
That was the second time in a week Zinn’s dogs attacked someone, he confirmed.
Motsumi’s employer Carmen du Plooy said she found her in severe pain on the pavement along Nicolas Smith Avenue in Monument.
“Parts of her flesh were ripped out. There are bite marks and bruises all over her body – it’s going to be a long road to recovery,” she said.
National Council of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) spokesperson Christine Koch told The Citizen animals are often put down after attacks according to the Animal Matters Amendment Act.
“A charge is normally laid following an attack. A ruling is then made in court on whether the animal should be put down or not,” said Koch.
“In other cases when the owner says put the animal down, we put the animal down.”
