Police recover hijacked vehicles, firearms

It is alleged the suspects attempted to rob security guards.

A cash-in-transit driver’s quick thinking led to the recovery of two hijacked vehicles and firearms in Lamontville, KwaZulu-Natal, the Rising Sun Chatsworth reports.

According to a police report, the security guards were travelling along KwaMakhutha when they were blocked by two vehicles.

The suspects were driving a Mercedes and Toyota Fortuner. The driver noticed the suspects and drove to the police station for assistance.

Police who had been alerted about the attempted robbery, swung into action and chased after the vehicles. A chase and a shoot-out ensued between police and the suspects from Isipingo to Lamontville. The men then abandoned their Toyota Fortuner and two firearms were found inside the vehicle.

Provincial police spokesman, Col Thembeka Mbhele, said that the cops continued to search for the suspects and later found the Mercedes Benz abandoned in the Umbumbulu area.

“Preliminary investigations at the scene revealed that Mercedes Benz was hijacked in KwaDabeka in May this year,” said Col Mbhele.
