Police rescue chained tortoise during illegal liquor raid in Klerksdorp
A protected tortoise was found chained and neglected at an illegal shebeen during a North West liquor trading operation.
A protected tortoise, believed to be between 50 and 70 years old, was rescued by police in Klerksdorp, North West, after it was found chained and neglected at an illegal shebeen.
According to The Witness, the leopard tortoise was rescued on Thursday afternoon (May 21) by Captain Elize van Schalkwyk, the commander of the police’s Firearm, Liquor and Second-Hand Goods Unit.
Van Schalkwyk had visited the premises in Wilken Street as part of a follow-up operation into illegal liquor trading.
A 51-year-old suspect was arrested for allegedly operating without a licence.
Tortoise found chained
However, while inspecting the property, officers stumbled upon the tortoise, which had been restrained and neglected.
Authorities said the condition in which the animal was found raised serious concerns, prompting an additional charge under the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962.
Nature conservation officials were immediately called to the scene, and the tortoise was handed over to field officer Kelly Meintjies shortly after the rescue.
Public urged to report wildlife crimes
Police have since warned members of the public against the illegal possession of tortoises, urging those without proper permits to surrender the animals to authorities.
They also encouraged residents to report suspected wildlife crimes, including the illegal trade or captivity of protected species.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court facing charges related to illegal liquor trading and animal cruelty.
The rescued tortoise is now in the care of conservation officials.
