Pupil killed, others airlifted after horror Gauteng crash

Family members and the community have been left reeling following a fatal collision involving school children.

A tragic collision between a bus and a scholar transport minibus in De Deur in Midvaal, Gauteng, has left one pupil dead and four others fighting for their lives.

The incident happened at around 06:30 today, casting a dark cloud over what should have been a typical school day.

According to Sedibeng police spokesman Captain Fikile Funda, the collision took place on Rose Road when a taxi carrying five pupils and a bus collided. The vehicles were driving in opposite directions and it appears the taxi was in the process of turning right, he says.

Midvaal Emergency Services, traffic officers and the local police raced to the scene.

Two helicopters landed on Rose Road and airlifted the most critically injured learners to Milpark Hospital.

The scene at De Deur Police Station was one of chaos and heartache, as parents and onlookers gathered, their faces marked with worry.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Funda said a case of capable homicide has been opened and investigations are underway.

“Passengers in the minibus were taken to Kopanong and Milpark hospitals. One was certified dead on the scene. The ages of the passengers ranged from 12 to 18. The driver of the minibus was treated on the scene for minor injuries.”
