Road spikes continue to damage vehicles on Pretoria’s highways
Motorists travelling in the north and east of Pretoria are warned to take precautions, especially at night, as various incidents where spikes were put in the road were reported in January and February.
More incidents of tyres and vehicles damaged by spikes placed in the road have been reported over the past few days, Rekord North reports.

The AfriForum neighbourhood watch, with GAC Risk Solutions, has issued a warning to residents living and travelling in the northern parts of Pretoria.

“Last night a vehicle was spiked on the N1 near the Zambesi off-ramp. It is still unknown whether the people in the vehicle were robbed,” said Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s head of safety for the northern region.
“There were three vehicles spiked in the early morning hours on the N4 between Solomon Mahlangu and the Simon Vermooten off-ramp. Occupants of one of the three vehicles were robbed.
“The SAPS and metro police responded quickly to the scenes, preventing the other vehicles from being robbed.”

Four suspects, however, fled the scene.
Earlier this month AfriForum neighbourhood watch and GAC Risk Solutions also warned motorists about what seems to be a new crime trend.

“This contraption is one of the methods criminals use to hijack road users, especially at night. Be vigilant while driving.”
Spikes are placed in the road to puncture the vehicle’s tyres.
“As soon as you stop you are robbed.”
“The spikes are placed in front of a bridge where you think it is safe to stop to check what is wrong with your vehicle.”
Coetzer has urged motorists not to stop on the side of the road, especially near or under a bridge.Vehicles damaged earlier this month with spikes placed in the middle of the road.
“Immediately call for help and drive to the nearest petrol station or continue driving until assistance can be provided, even if it costs you a tyre or rim.
“Criminals place this kind of contraption in the road and as you drive over it, they count on the fact that you will stop to investigate.
“Once you do this, you will become a victim. Please do not stop, drive to your nearest safe destination,” Coetzer added
