Rosebank restaurant race row

An upmarket restaurant in Rosebank has been accused of racism by a group of patrons who visited the establishment on New Year’s Eve.

Parkhurst resident Mmabatho Kau and her friends reported an alleged racial incident to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported.

Kau said the group had been having lunch at Spetada when one of her friends noticed an insect underneath a lamb chop.

“We thought it was a cockroach in the food and asked the waiter to take it back and asked for it to be removed from the bill,” she said.

After an exchange with staff, Kau said the floor manager returned with the insect to show them it was not a cockroach and told them flying insects in the vicinity may have flown into the food.

Upon paying the bill, Kau said they noticed the lamb chops were still included.

“When we asked why the [lamb chops] were still on the bill, [the waiter] said that he won’t remove it because he would have to pay for it,” she said.

According to Kau, the owner, Paul da Silva, told the group to “get the f*** out of here” when Kau tried to speak to him herself and said “all you black women need is a good sh*g”.

Da Silva had previously accused the group of attempting to play the race card to avoid having to pay for their meal, a claim Kau denied.

“His staff were there, and we wouldn’t risk our careers and reputations over a lie,” she said.

Last week the SAHRC said it was “most concerning” racism kept resurfacing in the country after graffiti containing a racial slur was discovered on the 14th Avenue, under Hendrik Potgieter Road bridge, in Roodepoort.

The graffiti was later defaced by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, who painted over the word “kaf**r” and put the words “racism is wrong” under it.
