Rumoured disciplinary action against ANC Sedibeng councillors sparks backlash

Political tensions are mounting in Sedibeng as calls for accountability in Emfuleni trigger backlash threats against outspoken councillors.

“Those who speak out against corruption should not be treated as enemies simply because they refuse to remain silent while communities suffer.”

According to Sedibeng Ster, these are the words of Afrika Mayibuye Movement (Mayibuye) national organiser Patrick Sindane.

Sindane was speaking following rumours that the ANC in Sedibeng intends instituting disciplinary measures against councillors who held a media briefing at Evaton Lifestyle yesterday (May 13).

SIU call defended

Sindane said Afrika Mayibuye Movement notes reports regarding the intention by the ANC in Sedibeng to institute disciplinary processes against councillors who publicly supported the call for a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) proclamation in the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM).

He added that while Mayibuye has no intention of dictating to the ANC how it must handle its internal organisational matters, the party believes the issues raised by the councillors remain extremely serious and cannot simply be brushed aside through disciplinary threats.

“The people of Sedibeng are fully aware of the state of affairs within Emfuleni and the broader region. Corruption, maladministration and the collapse of service delivery continue to rob our communities of dignity, development and basic services. Roads are collapsing, infrastructure is neglected, water challenges persist, and communities are losing trust in public institutions.”

‘Discipline must never replace the truth’

Sindane further said discipline must never replace the truth.

“Those who speak out against corruption should not be treated as enemies simply because they refuse to remain silent while communities suffer. The call for an SIU investigation is necessary and deserves support from all progressive forces committed to clean governance and accountability.”

In conclusion, Sindane said his party supports the call for a full SIU investigation into allegations of corruption and maladministration within the ELM.

“As a movement rooted amongst the people, we will continue to expose corruption, support whistleblowers and stand with every voice that speaks out against the abuse of public resources meant to serve our communities. The people of Sedibeng deserve transparency, accountability and leadership that places their interests above political protectionism.”

ANC responds

Meanwhile, ANC Sedibeng secretary Jason Mkhwane said: “We are still awaiting the full report and establish the real motive and will process the findings through the organisation’s structures. We will openly brief members of the media once we have concluded the internal engagements and related resolutions.”
