SA banks on tourism to drive jobs and growth as Africa’s Travel Indaba opens

A major tourism trade show is set to spotlight Africa’s economic potential, with Durban hosting a global platform for investment, growth and regional collaboration.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille will be launching Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 in Durban today as South Africa ramps up efforts to use tourism to boost the economy, create jobs and attract investment.

The Witness reports the launch at the Nelson Mandela Terminal in South Beach comes ahead of a major African tourism event which this year runs under the theme ‘Unlimited Africa: Growing Africa’s Tourism Economy’.

De Lille said tourism remains one of the country’s strongest economic tools, with the ability to deliver quick and wide reaching benefits.

“Tourism is one of the few industries that directly supports job creation, stimulates GDP growth and uplifts communities across accommodation, transport, SMMEs and cultural enterprises,” she said.

She said the sector must play a central role in South Africa’s economic recovery plans.

Focus of this year’s Indaba

This year’s Indaba will focus on growing demand, improving access to markets and strengthening partnerships across the tourism sector, while also pushing for more travel and trade within Africa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to officially open the trade show, which will take place between next Monday and Thursday at the Durban International Convention Centre.

KZN leaders say hosting the event is also a chance to showcase the province to global buyers and investors.

Economic opportunity for KZN and beyond

Provincial economic development head Dr Nkosenye Zulu said Africa’s Travel Indaba is a driver of economic recovery, a platform for opportunity and a gateway to the world.

eThekwini Mayor Vusumuzi Xaba said the event continues to create opportunities for local businesses, especially small enterprises looking to enter new markets.

Beyond the showcase, the Indaba is expected to bring investment into the country and position Africa as a strong, competitive tourism destination.
