SBV offers R500k for info on robbery

A R500 000 reward has been offered by SBV protection for information that could lead to the arrest of robbers who attacked its guards at an ATM in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria, earlier this week.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi said an SBV service guard and an alleged robber died during the exchange of gunfire at Ga-Rankuwa City Shopping Centre on Tuesday afternoon, Rekord North reported.

“Two SBV guards were coming out of the mall, one carrying a rifle and cash, when they were approached by five suspects,” he said.

Nkoadi said two of the five men shot at the guards and the guards returned fire.

“The guard and the robber were both hit in the head and died on the scene,” Nkoadi said. “Police are investigating.”

The rest of the robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Mark Barret, managing director of SBV Services SA, said the company was determined to bring the suspects to book.

“We are working with the authorities and no effort will be spared in finding the suspects. Loss of life will not be tolerated, we will stand together and will not give up until the perpetrators are brought to justice,” he said.

He urged anyone with any information to call SBV’s risk and governance unit on 083 408 7029.

According to the latest national crime statistics released on Tuesday, cash-in-transit heists decreased from 145 in 2012/13 and 2013/14 to 119 in 2014/15.
