Screwdriver-wielding robber shot dead

A house robbery case and an inquest docket have been opened after a homeowner shot dead a suspected robber in Lakefield, Benoni, on the East Rand, earlier today.

Acting Benoni Police Station commander Colonel Martin van Nieuwenhuizen said two suspects entered the house on Divot Street at about 5am, Benoni City Times reported.

“They entered the house by removing the burglar proofing. The homeowner woke up and confronted the two suspects inside the house. He said: ‘Get out of the house, but the suspects ignored him,’” Van Nieuwenhuizen added.

In a separate incident, a suspected house robber was killed in a shoot-out after a house robberyin Pinetown, Durban, in June.

Spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said four men entered the house in Caversham, Pinetown, at 7pm and ordered the two siblings they encountered to lie down, while they cleaned out the house.

“They removed jewellery, two plasma television screens, a laptop and three cellphones. One of the victims managed to access his firearm and opened fire at the suspects,” Naicker said in a statement.

“The suspects returned fire, wounding the victim. One of the suspects was fatally wounded in the shootout, while three managed to flee scene unharmed.”

Naicker said the injured man was taken to hospital in a stable condition. A case of armed robbery, attempted murder and inquest docket was opened.
