Security guard critically injured in Irene shooting

A security officer sustained serious injuries when he was shot in the face while on patrol.

A security officer was critically injured in a shooting at an agricultural research facility in Irene, Centurion, on Thursday evening.

According to a statement issued by the community emergency response team (Cert), the incident occurred at 23:53.

“A security officer in his 30s was shot in the face and sustained serious injuries. The assailants were allegedly waiting outside the security guard room and shot him as he exited for his hourly patrol at the premises,” the statement read.

Cert medical personnel worked to stabilise him before a Netcare 911 emergency helicopter airlifted him to a top trauma facility in the area in a critical but stable condition.

Cert thanked the various emergency response organisations that assisted at the scene, including Monitor Net, SRU strategic response rescue unit, Tracker, Lyttleton police, Safe City Projects, Prime Africa Security, Emer-G-Med and Netcare911 Hems.

Police are investigating the shooting.
