Seven wanted for rape and robbery

Police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for about seven suspects in connection with a house robbery and rape committed in Tonga near Malalane.

It is alleged the suspects stormed into a house with five occupants, held them at gunpoint and tied them with wires before ransacking the house at about 9.30pm on Tuesday, Mpumalanga Newsreported.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Leonard Hlathi said the suspects stole electronic equipment, jewellery and other valuable items along with the victims’ two vehicles.

“A 20- year-old woman was raped during the process and the victim’s car was found abandoned in the bushes at Steenbok near Tonga,” added Hlathi.

No arrests have been made.

Police urge anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators to contact Lieutenant Sikhumbuzo Ceko on 082 937 2570 / 013 780 8335.

In a separate incident, two men appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court for their alleged involvement in the hijacking and rape of a 28-year-old woman in Bloemfontein, Free State.

Mohobeleli said the woman and her 45-year-old male companion were surprised by a group of five men on May 30, at Phase 4 Mangaung.

”The pair had made a brief stop to allow the boyfriend to relieve himself when the suspects pounced. All five suspects then jumped into the vehicle and drove away with the female victim. Suspects stopped at an open field in Phase 4 where they took turns raping the woman before fleeing the scene,” Mohobeleli said.

The police were led to a shack where both suspects were arrested.
