Shaking felt in KZN after ‘magnitude 5.0 earthquake’

Residents in various parts of KZN felt the shake of an earthquake and were unsure if it was indeed a seismic-like event that hit them.

According to AfriWx, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit parts of KZN yesterday afternoon.

This is the second time in five weeks that the Zululand region was rocked by a ‘seismic-like event’ in the form of a tremor.

The earth shook shortly after 14.30, with residents of Richards Bay, eShowe, Nkandla, Melmoth, Empangeni, Mtunzini, Dumisani Makhaye, eSikhaleni, as well as Stanger, uMhlanga and Durban feeling the shaking in varying degrees of severity.

A Nkandla resident told Zululand Observer that he thought his house was falling down, while an Arboretum resident explained his whole house shook.

Most who felt the tremor said it lasted only a short while, and none reported any damage.

Volcanodiscovery.com, however, says the earthquake had only a ‘moderate magnitude’ of 4.6 at a depth of 10km. They add that the epicentre was 86km southeast of Dundee.

While it is presently unverified, areas to have felt it appear to be Greytown, Pietermaritzburg, KwaDukuza, Dundee, and as far afield as Mbabane (eSwatini), Johannesburg and Pretoria

Just last week, residents of Westonaria in Gauteng felt the shaking of a 4.2 magnitude tremor, according to eNCA.
