Shots fired over missing vape in Vanderbijlpark

A man is behind bars after discharging a blank gun after accusing a patron of stealing his girlfriend's vape.

Vanderbijlpark’s popular hangout spot, Kapito’s Lifestyle Lounge witnessed a night of terror on Saturday when a brawl between two patrons escalated into a dangerous and alarming situation.

The incident, which involved the brandishing of what appeared to be a firearm, has left the management and patrons of Kapito’s shaken.

This is after a squabble over a missing vape, believed to have belonged to the would-be attacker’s girlfriend, saw the situation quickly intensify, with the attacker storming off to his car and returning with what seemed to be a deadly firearm.

Panic and fear swept through the establishment as the aggressor discharged two shots outside the premises before firing another round within the lounge.

Out of fear, patrons stormed out of the establishment without paying their bills – and by damaging the property.

However, in a stroke of luck, there were no serious injuries reported among the patrons, as it was later confirmed that the weapon used was a blank gun.

Club owner Ehis Ebhonu says: “We take great pride in the environment we have created and will do everything within our powers and legal means to ensure that our patrons lounge in style, comfort, and above all, in a safe and secure environment.”

“As a result, we intend to prosecute the perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law. Though the incident cost the business tons of money as a result of damaged property and walkouts [people who ran off out of fear before paying their bills] we are comfortable with the fact that there were no serious injuries or loss of life.”

Ebhonu emphasises that: “We would like to reiterate our stance on violence at our establishment. We do not condone and will never condone violent conduct at our premises. If you are found to be perpetuating violence at Kapito’s, we will give you a lifetime ban and prosecute you to the greatest extent of the law.”

Vanderbijlpark police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale says they are investigating a case of discharging a firearm at a public place, and adds that a 32-year-old suspect has been arrested.
