Stay alert: Hijacking tactic uses animal cruelty as bait
Motorists are warned not to stop after reports of animals being used to lure victims on Western Cape roads.

The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa has warned of extreme levels of cruelty following reports of a disturbing hijacking tactic on the Cape Flats along the R300.
According to The Witness, the organisation said criminals are allegedly hanging dogs from concrete palisade walls using wire around their necks to create shocking scenes that may prompt motorists to stop and assist, leaving them vulnerable to robbery.
Incident raises alarm
The warning follows an incident on Sunday when a motorist spotted a dog hanging from a wall near Samora Machel and another trapped between concrete palisades.
Suspecting it could be a trap, the motorist did not stop and instead alerted the society.
Senior inspector Sivuyile Kilwa and senior nurse Michelle Henning responded, but both dogs had already died from injuries and suffocation.
Public urged to remain cautious
The organisation said the incident may not be isolated and reflects the level of cruelty criminals are willing to use.
Motorists have been urged not to stop if they encounter similar scenes, but to report the matter immediately to the society’s emergency hotline on 082 601 1761.
