Taxi driver arrested for rape
A 35-year-old man is expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court after he was allegedly caught by metro police raping a minor in his white Toyota Avanza taxi at Marlboro Cemetery in Johannesburg.
Alexandra police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela the man had allegedly followed the child who was walking alone to school and asked her to get into the taxi so he could take her to school at about 7.30am on September 30, Alex News reported.
“When the girl refused, he threatened to kill her and forced her into the taxi. He drove to the cemetery where he then allegedly told her to undress. When she refused, he again threatened to kill her. Metro police on patrol spotted the taxi and found him allegedly raping the child, resulting in his arrest,” added Maphakela.
He said police were concerned about several reports of rape in Avanza taxis in the area.
“One was reported in July, another in August and two including this one were reported in September,” Maphakela said.
He said the Avanza rapist suspect has been linked to another case which he is said to have admitted committing, but denies another case that allegedly police pinned on him.
The suspect appeared in court on Monday. The case was postponed to next week Monday (12 October). He is facing two counts of rape.
In a separate incident, a Grade 2 pupil was allegedly raped while waiting to be transported from school in Clernaville, KwaZulu-Natal, in March.
It is believed the child was left behind when the school bus came to fetch children at the school. An unidentified man allegedly lured the girl to his house, where he raped her.
