Three-day-old baby abandoned at hostel

A case of child abandonment has been opened by police in Montclair, south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, after a three-day-old infant was found in a hostel last week.

A security guard found the abandoned infant while patrolling at the SJ Smith hostel in the Jacobs area on Thursday evening, Southlands Sun reported.

The security guard allegedly heard the baby crying and contacted police, who then took the baby boy to the Montclair Police Station.

He has since been placed in the care of KZN-based Isiaiah 54 Children’s Sanctuary.

“The three-day-old Themba, as named by the sanctuary, is doing well,” said Montclair Victim Support Centre’s Brenda Neal.

No arrests have been made.

Last month, an abandoned newborn baby boy was found wrapped in a black plastic bag at a park in Standerton, Mpumalanga.

The child’s mother apparently told the nursing staff at Standerton Hospital she did not want the baby, but was later discharged with the newborn.

The mother has been arrested, and a case of neglect was opened, while the baby was taken to the Trauma Care Centre and later handed over to a social worker to be put in a place of safety.
