Three suspects arrested for tombstone theft

Five tombstone blocks and pillars were found in a suspicious-looking Venture.

Three men, aged between 29 and 46, have been arrested for allegedly stealing tombstones at Mooifontein Cemetery, Kempton Park, on the East Rand.

Norkem Park police spokesperson Captain Lesibana Molokomme said five tombstone blocks and pillars were found in a suspicious-looking Venture when the vehicle was searched on Tuesday, the Kempton Express reported.

He said members of Ekurhuleni Metro Police arrested the three at about 2pm.

“The officers were stopped by security officers at the cemetery who pointed out a suspicious white Venture parked in the vicinity. When the car was searched, the suspected stolen goods were found,” Molokomme said.

Investigations are in progress trying to find the owners of the tombstones that were removed.

Norkem Park SAPS also arrested seven other suspects during the past 24 hours.
