Tip-off leads to arrest
A tip-off has led to an arrest of a 31-year-old suspect for business robbery in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal.
It was alleged that at about 4.50am today, members of KwaDabeka police were driving along Old Main Road in Hillcrest when they were stopped by the taxi driver informing them about two suspicious vehicles with occupants loading some items outside the bottle store in Old Main Road.
Police went to the scene, and upon arrival, two vehicles fled the scene. A high-speed chase ensued.
It was alleged one suspect had jumped out of their vehicle in the KwaNyuswa area and fired shots at the police, and police had returned fire, wounding one suspect on the right thigh, and the other two fled.
The members searched the vehicle and recovered liquor suspected to be stolen during the break-in.
The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital for medical attention.
Police said the suspect would be charged for business robbery and was expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court immediately after his discharge from hospital.
The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, highly praised the police for the swift arrests.
“I would like to thank members of the community for their continued support in the fight against crime in the province,” said Ngobeni.
In a separate incident, two suspects appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court in connection with house robbery in KwaMashu in the north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal last Tuesday.
It was believed on January 10, at 12.45am, the victim, Ayanda Mnyandezi (26), had been alone at Manqongqo Road when two unknown men kicked the door open and threatened her with a knife.
The suspects took a laptop and an iPad before they fled the scene on foot, police said.
Following an intensive investigation
, police were able to trace and arrest the men on the same day of the robbery.
