Top Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department cop suspended

An independent investigator has been appointed to investigate allegations of sexual harassment against a metro police department chief.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has placed its chief, Isaac Mapiyeye, on precautionary suspension following sexual misconduct allegations levelled against him by a staff member.

The female EMPD employee, who is not being named for her protection, reported sexual harassment and intimidation to the city manager’s office.

According to the metro, Mapiyeye was served with the letter of his suspension on Wednesday.

“At a special council meeting held early this month, the council authorised the city manager [Dr Imogen Mashazi] to follow procedures in line, among others, with the Local Government Disciplinary Regulations for Senior Managers on the disciplinary procedures against senior managers, as well as the Systems of Delegations and relevant City of Ekurhuleni policies in dealing with the matter,” says metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

The council also authorised the city manager to appoint an independent investigator to investigate the allegations that the council ‘deemed to be serious in nature’.

“Upon the appointment of the independent investigator, the accounting officer is to submit the report to council of the latter, and findings against the chief of police, within 30 days of his appointment, the council resolved.”
