Tshwane: Illegal taverns shut down; 480 arrested over weekend
A total of 28 suspects were arrested for gender-based violence.

Senior SA police service management and other law enforcement agencies led a multidisciplinary operation in Tshwane this weekend that resulted in eight illegal liquor outlets being closed down and more than 480 people arrested.
Operation leader acting district commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine said Tshwane detectives made over 205 arrests during a high-density tracing of wanted suspects July 8 evening to the early hours of the following day.
Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said 28 suspects were arrested for gender-based violence.
She said the operation comprised roadblocks, stop-and-searches, foot patrols, tracing of wanted suspects, second-hand goods dealer compliance inspections and illegal liquor outlet raids.
“Suspects were arrested for offences ranging from possession of stolen and hijacked vehicles, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, house robbery, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, selling alcohol without valid documents, common assault, malicious damage to property, violation of protection orders, possession of dagga, possession of drugs, public violence, driving while under the influence of alcohol, armed robbery and the pointing of firearms.”
Selepe said 27 arrests were for drug-related crimes, 18 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 31 consuming alcohol in public areas and 63 for being in the country illegally.
She said the illegal immigrants were taken in by the Department of Home Affairs for processing.
