Two men arrested for possession of dagga worth R180 000 in Lydenburg
The police arrested two suspects aged 34 and 38 last Wednesday for the possession of dagga with a street value of about R180 000.
Brig Leonard Hlathi, police spokesperson, said, “Police received information about people who were involved in drug trafficking between Mbombela and Lydenburg.
The were following up on the information when they noticed a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi with two occupants.
They stopped the vehicle, conducted a thorough search and found six bags of dagga stashed inside.
“They were immediately arrested and a preliminary investigation revealed that the men had been transporting the dagga from Mbombela to Lydenburg.”
The suspects are expected to appear in the Lydenburg magistrate’s court on Wednesday facing charges of possession of dagga.
The provincial commissioner of SAPS, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, applauded the members of the public for supplying information to the police.
Zuma also thanked police officers for their quick reaction and resilience as well as total commitment in rooting out crime in the province. He sent out a strong warning to those who think they can take chances and perpetuate crime.
“The police, together with all law-enforcement agencies, are working around the clock to eliminate and prevent all criminal activities.”
He urged community members to continue working with the police. The public can provide information by calling 10111 or by sending an SMS to 32211.
Members of the community can also anonymously call 08600-10111. Alternatively, information can be shared with police via the MySAPS app. Their information will be treated with the strictest of confidence.
