VIDEO: Joburg smash-and-grab caught on camera

Dashboard camera footage showing a smash-and-grab incident on Witkoppen Road, near the Cambridge Road intersection, in Sandton has emerged.

The video, dated January 15, 2015, shows a man walking along Witkoppen Road, seemingly attracting motorists by pretending to beg, Fourways Review reported.

A second man is seen on the other side of the road apparently keeping watch.

As a white Landrover Discovery passes the first man, he appears to throw an object at the window, after which he climbs halfway into the vehicle before running across the road and jumping over the barriers.

According to eBlockwatch founder Andre Snyman, the intersection is a smash-and-grab hotspot.

“The smashers are far gone by the time the victim realises what has happened,” Snyman said.

He added motorists tend to avoid eye contact with “beggars”, which gave them the perfect opportunity for a smash-and-grab.

According to Craig Jennings, who uploaded the video on to YouTube, the robber made off with a cellphone, while the driver was left with a cut on her arm.

Last week, two men were arrested for attempting to steal a man’s wallet from his car in an alleged smash-and-grab in Sandton.

The motorist reportedly slowed down in peak afternoon traffic at the Grayston off-ramp from the N1 south.

One of the two men then opened the car’s door and removed the driver’s wallet from inside the car.

The driver got out and wrestled with the men while metro police officers who were nearby assisted and arrested both men.
