Video: One killed in truck crash

Investigations are under way after the emergence of video footage showing the aftermath of the head-on collision between a truck and a motor vehicle on the Old Middelburg Road in Witbank, Mpumalanga, this morning.

Police have opened a case of culpable homicide against the truck driver, who was taken to hospital for minor injuries, Witbank News reported.

Witbank police spokesperson Eddie Hall told The Citizen: “The driver of the motor vehicle died instantly, and it remains unclear as to what caused the accident”.

It is alleged at about 10am, the coal-carrying truck collided with a motor vehicle before overturning on the road.

In the video, traffic officers are seen diverting the traffic off the road as coal from the truck is scattered across both lanes.

Motorists were advised to use an alternative route.

In a separate incident, two people were killed after a truck overturned on Pryce Rosser and Heidelberg roads, just outside of City Deep, Johannesburg, earlier this month.

ER24 communications officer Russel Meiring said a truck carrying sand overturned and disposed of its materials on a lightweight motor vehicle, killing two.

Meiring added three people were currently trapped in the car, and emergency services attempted to attend to them.

“A taxi was also involved in the accident, and 10 to 15 passengers have sustained minor injuries. A second truck was affected by this accident,” said Meiring.

Meiring said the truck collided with a minibus before overturning into a Chrysler motor vehicle.
