Wanted Durban murder suspect nabbed by police

A man wanted in connection with the shooting and killing of a police officer’s son was apprehended after a high-speed chase.

A relentless multi-disciplinary search for a murder suspect ended with the successful arrest of a 31-year-old man in Point, Durban, on Monday.

An operation conducted by the police, members of the Hawks, metro police and private security officers resulted in his arrest.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says the suspect defied police orders for him to stop, and a high-speed vehicle chase ensued.

“The man was eventually outsmarted, ran out of space to run and was arrested. A search of his vehicle led to the recovery of two pistols with 32 rounds of ammunition.

“Investigations led the investigating team to his place of residence on Chippendale Road in Newlands East, where four rifles and 120 rounds of ammunition were found hidden under the bed,” says Netshiunda.

He adds that further investigations pointed the officers to his mother’s residence in KwaMashu. On arrival, two security guards who were guarding the premises abandoned their two rifles and fled.

“The suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of failure to safeguard firearms.

“He was remanded in custody and will be back in the dock on January 26.”

The suspect was wanted in connection with a murder case in which the son of a police officer was gunned down on Mfolozi Road at C Section in KwaMashu on November 25 last year, says Netshiunda.

The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistics testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any other crimes.

“His vehicle was also confiscated for further investigations.”
