Watch: Flash flood hits Margate, more rain expected

Two impact-based weather warnings have been issued for KZN today, while the extent of yesterday's flood is not yet known.

A heavy downpour late last night hit South Coasters by surprise to some extent. Flooding has as a result occurred in several places in Margate.

Videos have circulated on WhatsApp groups, especially of water gushing down from Marine Drive towards the beach, damaging paving.

According to comments on social media, local security personnel pulled some motorists from their cars on the toll road. This is yet to be confirmed.

The extent of the damage is not yet known, and it is unclear if any injuries have been reported.

Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service in its travellers’ forecast for today announced two impact-based warnings for KZN:

  • A yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rainfall that can lead to localised flooding and damage to property is expected in places over the south-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and south-eastern parts of KZN.
  • An orange level 5 warning for disruptive rain is expected over the extreme south-eastern parts of KZN.
