Video footage shows a high-speed chase between the police and presumably a second suspect in an armed robbery case outside a lifestyle estate.

The swift action by the police’s flying squad saw a second suspect arrested in connection with an armed robbery that occurred outside the Elawini Lifestyle Estate in Mbombela, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the first arrest was made in KaNyamazane at about 15:30 on the day of the robbery. He says a 32-year-old man was apprehended and an unlicensed firearm with 13 rounds of ammunition was recovered. He is expected to appear in Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court today. The outcome of the court appearance was not yet known at the time of publishing.

The second arrest, which was caught on video, occurred at about 18:30 on Wednesday on Dr Enos Mabuza Drive between Nelsville and Steiltes.

A resident who lives in the area, who asked not to be named, says they had heard shots being fired, and soon after, drove past a crash scene of a Volkswagen Golf GTi that had reportedly driven into the wall at the back of the Matumi Golf Estate.

The area was cordoned off with police tape, police were on scene and a suspect could be seen sitting on the grass near the wreckage.

The arrest followed joint efforts by various police units, Bossies Community Justice, the Nelspruit Community Policing Forum and the Fidelity Specialised Intervention Unit. It was reported that the Mpumalanga Flying Squad had chased down the suspect.

Lowvelder is awaiting official police comment on the second arrest and will provide its readers with an update as soon as more information becomes available.
